The Audubon's Indigo series celebrates the indigo bunting — one of North America's most improbably vivid birds. The breeding male carries a blue so pure it seems lit from within; females and juveniles beside him are warm brown, as if belonging to a different species entirely. Each panel is set in the same leafy botanical interior, painted with the warmth and close observation of a 19th-century ornithological study.
About this piece
Aquarius opens the composition wider — three birds now, more space between them, a small red flower appearing at upper right that belongs to no other panel in the series. Two males in full electric blue plumage and a grey-brown companion are distributed across a leafier, more open arrangement. Where Virgo is a close study, Aquarius is the broader survey of the same territory.
