The Audubon's Indigo series celebrates the indigo bunting — one of North America's most improbably vivid birds. The breeding male carries a blue so pure it seems lit from within; females and juveniles beside him are warm brown, as if belonging to a different species entirely. Each panel is set in the same leafy botanical interior, painted with the warmth and close observation of a 19th-century ornithological study.
About this piece
Virgo is the more intimate of the two panels — two birds, close together, the male in full breeding blue at the lower branch and a darker companion tucked into the upper boughs above. Of the two compositions, this one has less air: the birds share the same leafy interior without quite acknowledging each other, and the space between them is the quiet of familiarity rather than distance.
