Pheasants: Flower 24X30

The Pheasant series works in the vocabulary of classical Asian decorative painting — the tall vertical composition, the flowering branch, the extraordinary bird at rest among blossoms. Each panel shares the same luminous pale ground and the same pheasant, its teal and copper plumage held against botanical abundance with the unhurried confidence of something that has never needed to compete for attention.

About this piece

Pheasant Flower gives the roses more of the canvas — their purple-pink petals are as extravagant as the pheasant's plumage at lower right, and neither defers to the other. A moth at upper left and a dragonfly at center complete the composition's decision to include everything worth looking at. The pheasant watches it all with the patience of a regular visitor.
